ECCo and The Field Museum
ECCo’s roots are The Field Museum’s collectionsnot only its 22 million natural history specimens and cultural artifacts, but also its electronic databases, books, periodicals, photographs, illustrations, and archival and instructional materials. Amplifying the strength of these tangible (or virtual) objects is the collective field experience of the Museum’s staff and collaborators. These treasures enrich our understanding of diversity and are our foundation for action. In tapping this source for a worldwide community, ECCo joins forces with other units at the Museum: Collections and Research, and Public Programs. ECCo embodies an academic institution’s strong commitment to a vision of a planet that resonates with life.
ECP’s first realm is nature, translating biodiversity science into conservation action that benefits wild places and their human neighbors; CCUC’s is culture, recognizing that valuing cultural difference can promote social change. These complementary components of ECCo share the conviction that all citizens have the right and the responsibility to decide the future of the wealthboth biological and culturalthat they hold in trust. Both CCUC and ECP engage these trustees of diversity by focusing on assets, rather than solely on threats. ECCo staff and their community partners literally put these assets onto the map, showing the places where cultural and natural strengths intersect. They acknowledge that change is a vital force in any landscape and that success means working with change. By giving a voice to the values of rural and urban people, ECCo and its partners foster respect for other lifeways, other species, and other communitiesan understanding that is essential if all, or any, are to survive.
