  • Jan 2-6th
    Mark Westneat, Audrey Aranowsky and Alta Buden attended SICB (Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology), in San Antonio,TX. We had a booth and took the opportunity to make contacts with many scientists interested in future synthesis meetings as well as spread the word about the EOL among the large gathering of specialists. We also enjoyed the warm weather, abundance of barbeque and visits to the Alamo.

  • Jan 7th
    Torsten Dikow, our very first post-doc officially began work.

  • Jan 8th
    BioSynC supported 15 grant proposals going into the National Science Foundation for the winter deadline, in capacities ranging from collaborator and support for EOL web-based information services to more formal budget arrangements for synthesis meetings and outreach.

  • Jan 10th
    The EOL blog was launched! Check it out and leave comments at blog.eol.org. Alta Buden has been very active in blogging about the EOL and BioSynC activities.

  • Jan 12th
    Mark Westneat presented a lecture to the Liverwort Tree of Life group entitled The Biodiversity Synthesis Center: Accelerating the Pace of Scientific Discovery With the Encyclopedia of Life.

  • Jan 15th
    Mark Westneat presented a lecture to the Founder's Council of the Field Museum entitled Coral Reef Fishes and the Information Age: Illustrating Biodiversity and Evolution in the Encyclopedia of Life.

  • Jan 15th
    BioSynC Submitted a poster abstract titled Biodiversity Synthesis Meetings—Working Together for Discovery and Conservation to the AMNH Biodiversity and Conservation Center's Spring Symposium- "Sustaining Cultural and Biological Diversity in a Rapidly Changing World: Lessons for Global Policy" Which takes place at the AMNH from April 2-5th.   • Jan 22nd
    Mark Darolyn Striley, our new Administrative Assistant officially started work.

  • Jan 29th
    Audrey Aronowsky, Elizabeth Babcock and Steve Strohmeier attended a meeting at the MacArthur Foundation as part of their Digital Learning initiatives, and started developing collaborative plans with Rik Panganiban of Global Kids for possible educational uses of the EOL and synthesis ideas from BioSynC.

  • Jan 30th
    The Center for Biodiversity and Conservation notified us that our poster will be included in their symposium. We are very excited to be attending, and hope to make good connections and gather new ideas for how synthesis meetings can be geared towards conservation in the future.
