Mammoths and Mastodons:
Titans of the Ice Age
From 1.8 million to 10,000 years ago, as Earth experienced a great ice age, the colossal mammoth and mastodon roamed the northern hemisphere. What was life like for these animals, whose remains invite so much modern fascination and speculation?
In The Field Museum’s exciting new traveling exhibition, explore the world of mammoths and mastodons through fossils, artifacts, engaging interactives, immersive media, and the story of the most complete and best-preserved mammoth ever found, the baby Lyuba. Meet the entire Proboscidean familyfrom mammoths to elephantsand discover what makes them different from all other species on Earth. From the Pleistocene to the present, explore their habitats, their neighborssuch as the saber-toothed cat and short-faced bearsand their human hunters. Investigate current theories about their DNA and extinction, and journey with scientists who continue to study their living cousinsthe elephants.
