George Washington Carver
What makes a person a legend? For George Washington Carver, it was much more than peanuts. Through more than one hundred artifacts, videos, models, and hands-on interactives, this exhibition presents his extraordinary lifefrom a birth in slavery to international renown as a scientist and humanitarian. Visitors can:
discover how Carver used his gifts of curiosity and persistence to achieve his lifelong mission: to bring practical knowledge to those in need.
- see a re-created laboratory bench from his tenure at the famed Tuskegee Institute and the actual equipment he used to realize his "mighty vision"exhausted fields turning green with crops.
explore a life-size reproduction of the horse-drawn wagon that he customized with plants, products, and tools and toured across the region to share his ideas.
- witness how Carver laid the groundwork for organic farming and today's research on plant-based fuels, medicines, and everyday products.
- meet people whose lives Carver influencedsuch as botanists exploring how to grow food in space.
